Rose City Mortgage Specialists named fourth best small-business employer

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (February 28, 2008)

Oregon Business Magazine has honored Rose City Mortgage Specialists as the fourth of 50 top Oregon small-business employers for 2008. Rose City staff learned of the award Tuesday, Feb. 26, at a dinner where the 50 top small-business and 50 top large-business employers were named. The mortgage firm climbed 10 spots from its 2007 ranking of 14th out of 50 small firms of 250 or fewer employees.

Portland-based Rose City Mortgage Specialists recently expanded its staff to 26 people. The firm added 1,000 square feet to its Johns Landing office,6200 S.W. Macadam Ave., to support the firm's growth.

Company owner Renee Spears said, "This is especially meaningful because of the recent turmoil in the mortgage industry. We've come through this past year as a stronger company."

Rose City Mortgage Specialists has received several honors in recent years for its employee- and community-friendly business practices.

Rose City Mortgage Specialists Loan Officer Doyle Dillon says what sets the company apart is the many ways employees are encouraged to celebrate their diversity and become better people as they also become better loan officers. "This company has always supported our individual passions and interests, helping us to develop business sources among those with whom we share values, as well as actively introducing us to new experiences," he says.

A record number of employees -- more than 25,000 -- nominated 312 Oregon companies for the top 100 awards. Staff rated their workplaces in these categories: benefits and compensation, work environment, decision-making and trust, performance management, career development and learning. Employee surveys and a benefits report determined the annual rankings. Rose City ranked 3rd of 50 small businesses in work environment. "Getting on the 100 Best list is not easy," says Oregon Business Editor Robin Doussard. "Those that do make this list are great examples of workplaces that truly stand out."

The Rose City workspace looks more like a living room than an office, lending to a friendly informal atmosphere that employees, clients and community groups enjoy. Frankie Lacy, Rose City's office manager, says, "We always hear from the staff and clients who walk into our living room area that we are a warm, friendly and family-oriented company. We all work together so well that we've changed the term ‘working as a team' to 'working as a caring family."
