Renee Spears has the kind of do it yourself attitude that makes Rose City Mortgage stand out from the crowd. As a child, she dreamed not of becoming a doctor or lawyer. No, Renee wanted to travel the country and sell tropical fish from the back of a van. If she had followed her childhood dream, we’re sure she’d be the biggest name in tropical fish today. But we’re glad she chose a different path.
Even early in her working career, Renee rose above the crowd. She tutored biology and genetics to college students. She was one of the first certified aerobics instructors in the U.S. and was a finalist for Jane Fonda’s workout videos in the 1980s. It’s no surprise then that she quickly rose the ranks in the mortgage industry.
Renee says, “I started as a temp receptionist for a mortgage company. One of my jobs was to file the loan guidelines. Well, I read everything that I filed and after a couple of months I knew more about loans than the people running the company.”
She has held every job in the mortgage industry from receptionist, to loan officer to operations manager to regional vice president. And when she learned all that she could, she decided to start her own business.
When Renee started Rose City Mortgage, she knew one thing.“I’ve worked at many places that treated their employees poorly and took advantage of them for bottom line gain.It was easy for me to see the way it shouldn’t be done and just change that,” she says. And she has been true to her word. Her employees boast that they have the “best boss in the world.”
We’re not the only ones who think Renee is great. In 2005 she was voted one of the Portland Business Journal’s Business Women of the Year. She was Oregon’s Association of Mortgage Professional’s Mortgage Broker of the Month for two months in 2004.She is co-founder of the Greener Good women’s marketing group and is a previous Portland Area Business Association board member.
In her free time Renee enjoys organic gardening and travel to Europe. When’s she not in the office she can be found hiking in the Columbia River Gorge with her dogs Sophie and Princess. Stop by the office and meet Renee, the woman behind Rose City Mortgage.
